...100 Days & Counting

Happy 100th! Today marks the infamous 100th day in a presidency where it is common practice to reflect, remark and reject what the head of state has put into action thus far. Promises are measured against acts, especially during trying times like this the United States is currently in. For the last four months the world has watched as President Obama has tried to deliver on his campaign's platform of "Yes, WE Can!"

So we all know the economy stinks, auto companies are desperate and currently there is yet another reason not to eat pork; but despite it all Americans seem to still be hopeful of the direction President Obama is leading the country. In an AP poll 64 percent of Americans agreed that they were pleased with the commander in chief's performance so far. Further, the approval of the actual direction the country is headed is up 8 percent from two months ago, coming in at 48 percent. While 90 percent of the country feels the economy is an important issue, people seem to be giving the government a chance.

So, people of the poor, poor city of Cleveland, what say you? On this 100th day in office are you still optimistic? President Obama says "yes, we can," but can we? Personally, I'd still like to think we will:

"I'm confident in the future but I'm not content with the present," the president told a town-hall style event in a St. Louis suburb.

A WOMAN'S FIRST AID KIT TO RELATIONSHIPS.....PLEASE BUY THIS BOOK!

Beyonce has been good with representing for the ladies, anthems that stroke our ego, giving us that extra ounce of confidence in the club, whenever we hear that song. “I don’t think you ready….,” “I’m a Survivor...,” “To the Left to the Left….” and “Diva is a female version……” She has been pretty on point with telling our men exactly how we feel, but the truth of the matter is that while Beyonce seems to be everyone’s emotional and lyrical spokeswoman, have we taken a look at ourselves as well, in the relationship to see in what ways we could’ve been wrong also? Are we taking these devastating break ups and learning from them? Or are we blaming the men every single time, when in reality, some of it was our own fault? I am not saying that every time you and your boo break up, low key, it was your fault and to blame yourself, but I am saying to look at the situation, look at what he did/didn’t do AND look at what you did and didn’t do also.

When a break up occurs, we as humans, male and female, have a tendency to quickly point the blame at the other person. “He kicked it too much.” She was always nagging.” He had wandering eyes/was too flirty.” She was too insecure.” And the list goes on. While some reasons may be legit, sometimes, we have to look at the person for who they are, look at ourselves for what we need to do to help save the relationship and look at the fact of if we feel that the work is really worth it.

Ladies, let me talk to you for a minute:

We all love to say that he was in the wrong. We all love to make him seem like the enemy when we talk to our friends about the break up. We all love to believe that it was all him and he was the reason why the relationship was ruined. It makes us feel safe, better about ourselves and most importantly, secure. So after the “emotional rollercoaster” of the “I miss him,” I hate him,” etc. we take it like a grain of salt and move on, or try to at least, but are we really moving on? We sweep the “problems from the past” under the rug, until they build up. But you can’t hide dirt under a rug but for so long. It needs to be cleaned or you will ruin the rug. We as women, cannot run from past situations and not deal with them, or they will ruin us as women. Our souls will be killed and then we become that “bitter woman”, the infamous syndrome that all men like to diagnose us with. So before moving on to the next man, really take the time to think about what went wrong in the last relationship. While it is likely that it was his doing, it could’ve as well had been your doing as well. Relationships in general, are like a domino effect, unfortunately. How one person acts, what they do and say are fed off of and then the next person reacts based off of those actions. So maybe he really does have those wandering eyes but maybe because you weren’t giving him the attention that he may have really wanted/needed. Or he could just be a loser. But as women, we need to learn and understand why our men do what they do instead of assuming it and trying to change them because that will only push them away, causing them to do the stupid things that they sometimes do.

Everyone knows the good ole saying, “Men are from Venus and Woman are from Mars.” This statement holds a lot of substance and truth and should be taken seriously. What we as women fail to realize or understand, is that men were built differently from women. I can take it back biblically, but I’m not going to today. Men aren’t emotional creatures. Therefore, they cannot relate to our emotions and to the small things that we are sensitive about. They weren’t built to think like us and we weren’t built to think like them. So we need to stop assuming that they know how we really feel about certain issue, because 9 times out of 10, they don’t and never will. I can go on and on about the differences between men and women, but instead I am going to strongly encourage all of my ladies out there, single and boo’ed up, to read “For Women Only” by Shaunti Feldhahn (http://www.shaunti.com.) After reading this book, a lot of light was shed on men and women and how we as women, need to try harder to better understand that important man in our life.

Once we decide within ourselves to understand and not assume, then I do believe that our relationships/friendships with the opposite sex could be a lot healthier and successful and I am speaking from personal experience. I can truly say that I am not as stressed out when it comes to men because I look at their actions differently now. I don’t excuse everything that they do, but it doesn’t get me as upset anymore and that’s what we women need, that sixth sense of not allowing men to destroy us emotionally, but to accept some, and I stress, SOME of their actions as they are, and working WITH them and not AGAINST them to help make them that better man that he is destined to be. Now that’s a real UPGRADE!

Now for the fellas, check out her book, “For Men Only” because you can learn a thing or two also, about the special lady in your life.

...I Said They Wanna Be Startin' Something

Beyonce has one. Rihanna has one. Michael Jackson had a few before he had to put everything on auction and started wearing pajamas everywhere. Balmain jackets are those edgy, military-style jackets you may have noticed lately. They look best dressed down with jeans and a tee underneath. Besides, you probably won't be able to afford doing much else with them since these jackets start at around $5000. I would expect to see some lower end ones popping up while spring is here. While I'm not too keen on the shoulders, I love how fun and fearless they are. Very Coldplay Viva la Vida-ish...oh, and of course, Michael Jackson-y.

Diddy's "Last Train to Paris"

Yep, so Diddy is at it again....So what is he up to now? "Train Music" thats what. He describes train music as "electro hip hop soul funk" music, as he graces Rolling Stone Magazine with a press release about his current project. The upcoming release of "Last Train to Paris" will be available on September 22, 2009. This album, as Diddy describes, will be a different kind of project for him.

He describes this album as "a profound love story. It’s me with my shades off. It’s the truth," Diddy says. "I’ve been a businessman for the past two years. It’s time for me to focus on being an artist again. I am going to show the world a new refreshing side of me. Get on or get off!" (www.rollingstone.com)

This album will definitely showcase some of the hottest producers in the game. The Dream, The Neptunes, Mario Winans and T Pain are just a few names to grace Diddy's lastest project.

Will this project fail like many other Bad Boy projects (ie, The Band, Danity Kane) or will it actually lace Bad Boy with a new and refreshing reputation? Only time will tell......

To Be Continued.....

There's Something About Keri...

Hilson, that is. I Can't listen to this right now, but I'm sure it's a good one...unless it isn't. But I bet it is!

Trojan Man - Keri Hilson

Just Another Sad Love Song...

Welcome to heartbreak my friends. It's that time of year again when people ditch their cabin fever along with their significant other in favor of the freedom warmer weather brings. Many of us have a playlist on iTunes ready for such occasions. I usually start out with some Stevie or Alicia Keys. But when I break out the Prince and Sheryl Crow? Well you might just want to check on me at least three times a day. Anyway, I'd like to share my personal sad song essentials reserved for special circumstances:

Atlantic Starr- "If Your Heart Isn't in it"

I love this song. Ever deal with someone who you really like, but they pretty much seem like they hate you? Like with a passion. Well I wouldn't know how that feels (lying), but I would imagine it sucks. This one is for when mere actions just won't do. You pretty much need for them to say they hate you directly in order for it to sink in:

"If your heart isn't in it
Why can't you tell me so?
If my heart wasn't in it
I'd have gone long ago
If your heart isn't in it
Why keep me hangin' on?
Just tell me and I'll be gone
From your life"

Isley Brothers-"Hello It's Me"

Beautiful song. This one's for when you know good and well it's over between you, but emotion gets in there and its hard to just walk away. Usually, this is accompanied by an "it's complicated" relationship status on Facebook.

Hello, it's me
I've thought about us for a long, long time
Maybe I think too much but something's wrong
Something here that doesn't last too long
Maybe I shouldn't think of you as mine

Prince-"The Beautiful Ones"

Don't get me started on Prince. This song is for when you really, really want somebody who just doesn't seem to want you back.

Baby, baby, baby
Can't you stay with me tonight
Oh baby, baby, baby
Don't my kisses please you right
You were so hard to find
The beautiful ones, they hurt you every time

Teddy Pendergrass-"Love T.K.O."

You've been lied to, stood up and you're not sure but they may have even cheated! Their cell phone stays locked and on silent. Sad thing is, you've been here before. Teddy's grainy voice will have thinking about some things on this one.

Lookin' back over my years
Guess, I've shedded some tears
Told myself time and time again
This time I'm gonna win
But another fight, things ain't right
I'm losing again
Takes a fool to lose twice
And start all over again
Think I'd better let it go
Looks like another love T.K.O. (Oh...oh...oh...)

Stevie Wonder-"Rocket Love"

This song is pure heartbreak. It's for when you're dealing with a person who loves you one day, then hates you the next. A roller coaster ride for the heart.

You took me riding in your rocket gave me a star
But at a half a mile from heaven you dropped me back
down to this cold, cold world
Took me riding in your rocket gave me a star
But at a half a mile from heaven you dropped me back
down to this cold, cold world

Sheryl Crow-"Strong Enough"

And this is where it gets pretty serious. Forget pride, forget all the bad things. You don't even care anymore. You just want them back.

When I've shown you that I just don't care
When I'm throwing punches in the air
When I'm broken down and I can't stand
Will you be strong enough to be my man?

Lie to me
I promise I'll believe
Lie to me
But please don't leave

Okay, that's enough of me and my sad love songs. What songs do you have on your iTunes playlist for bad breakups?

Is It Really Real?

Ok, I tried to like Harlem Heights I really did. After probably the second episode, however, they lost me. I love to see young, ambitious, affluent African Americans on tv. We need those positive images. But for me HH felt more like a boring soap opera than it did "reality television." I'm no fool, I realize most "reality" tv is anything but. But can someone please explain to me what even a semi-reality tv show needs with a wardrobe stylist-the legendary June Ambrose, no less?! We're talking the same woman infamous for putting Missy in that garbage bag suit in her debut video for "I Can't Stand The Rain," and the same woman who has styled the who's who in Black Hollywood. And they have makeup and hair stylist. I may not live in Harlem, but I definitely don't have any of those on speed dial.

And how about that gratuitous product placement? I just watched a character stand in front of a "mirror" (with fabulous lighting) and apply Ambi lotion to her arms with the bottle facing the camera! B.E.T. Has even pulled this on my personal favorite College Hill many times with Dr. Miracle's hair care line (although I choose to believe those kids are too young and dumb to be acting).

Anywho, if B.E.T. wants me, and other boring people with boring lives like me, to keep on watching their programming they've got to step it up. I mean, first it was the cheap production (College Hill 1st season anyone?) and now they've gone the way of MTV with the fakeness that is The Hills (even though I secretly LOVED The City). If they keep this up I may just have to go live my own life... and it's always so much more fun to watch other people make mistakes!

P.S. Brooke was my favorite actress on HH though :)

A QUICK FACT ON 4/20, FOR ALL OF YOU WEED SMOKERS OUT THERE.....

DISCLAIMER: THE LADIES OF DOLLHOUSE DO NOT SMOKE WEED AND WE ARE NOT PROMOTING IT, IN ANY SHAPE, FORM OR FASHION. THIS IS JUST A QUICK INFO DROPPER FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO ARE CELEBRATING THIS UNOFFICIAL HOLIDAY, KNOWN AS 4/20.

ACCORDING TO ABOUT.COM
"In the early 1970s a small group of hippie stoners at San Rafael High School in northern California used to meet at a designated location every day to smoke pot at 4:20 p.m. They did this so regularly that among members of the group "420" became a general euphemism for lighting up. The catchphrase spread beyond the immediate group, beyond the high school, and ultimately beyond California, so that within a decade or two pot smokers were using it across the country and indeed the world over."

DAY 26: FOREVER IN A DAY

Day 26 dropped their sophomore album today, "Forever in a Day" and needless to say, it is very different from their first album. Unlike their debut album, "Forever in a Day" is definitely current and is flowing with what the music scene has been bringing lately. Auto Tune effects, in the club bangers and a few popular cameos, this CD may have given Day 26 that newness that they need to stay on top of their "A" game.

A huge Day 26 or shall I say, Making the Band fan, I must say that even though personally I prefer the first album, "Forever in a Day" definitely will keep a temporary spot in my car cd player for atleast the rest of this week. Something to ride to, since the weather is warming up, "Imma Put It On Her" and "Stadium Music" as heard on the show, are some favs of mine....Oh yea, and track #14 "Your Heels" for us sexy ladies, is a good one too! This track may actually make its way to a few facebook statuses.

Overall, I give "Forever in a Day" a B+. But why dont you go and cop the album yourself and let Dollhouse know how you feel about it!

ARE YOU SERIOUS?

CASSIE GONE MAD? KANYE WEST AKA GAYFISH? RIHANNA DRINKING HER SORROWS AWAY?

ACCORDING TO KANYE WEST @ KANYEUNIVERSECITY.COM, "SOUTH PARK MURDERED ME LAST NIGHT AND IT'S PRETTY FUNNY. IT HURTS MY FEELINGS BUT WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT FROM SOUTH PARK! I ACTUALLY HAVE BEEN WORKING ON MY EGO THOUGH. HAVING THE CRAZY EGO IS PLAYED OUT AT THIS POINT IN MY LIFE AND CAREER. I USE TO USE IT TO BUILD UP MY ESTEEM WHEN NOBODY BELIEVED IN ME. NOW THAT PEOPLE DO BELIEVE AND SUPPORT MY MUSIC AND PRODUCTS THE BEST RESPONSE IS THANK YOU INSTEAD OF "I TOLD YOU SO!!!" IT'S COOL TO TALK SHIT WHEN YOU'RE RAPPING BUT NOT IN REAL LIFE. WHEN YOU MEET LITTLE WAYNE IN PERSON HE'S THE NICEST GUY FOR EXAMPLE. I JUST WANNA BE A DOPER PERSON WHICH STARTS WITH ME NOT ALWAYS TELLING PEOPLE HOW DOPE I THINK I AM. I NEED TO JUST GET PAST MYSELF. DROP THE BRAVADO AND JUST MAKE DOPE PRODUCT. EVERYTHING IS NOT THAT SERIOUS. AS LONG AS PEOPLE THINK I ACT LIKE A BITCH THIS TYPE OF SHIT WILL HAPPEN TO ME. I GOT A LONG ROAD AHEAD OF ME TO MAKE PEOPLE BELIEVE I'M NOT ACTUALLY A HUGE DOUCHE BUT I'M UP FOR THE CHALLENGE....."

Shopping in a Recession

So in case you haven't heard we are in a recession. Breaking news, right? Well, just because some of us aren't exactly thriving financially doesn't mean we should just throw in the towel and hide out until things get better. There are ways to keep looking like a million bucks, even if it feels like you're that far in debt.

*Sorry M.A.C., Bobby Brown, Estee Lauder and the like. Frugal dolls are finding unbeatable deals in the same stores they get their Tylenol and tampons. That's right, Walgreens, CVS and Rite Aid are offering irresistable sales on makeup. Many of them have buy one get one free on the best of the drugstore brands. L'oreal's HIP (High Intensity Pigments) line has been rivaling the shades at M.A.C. for a few years now. And Maybelline has long been known as the queen of mascaras. Stock up on the essentials and leave the extras to the department stores. This way if a shade doesn't work out you haven't wasted an arm and a leg on it, and some drugstores have good return policies on makeup.

*Whenever you are about to make an online purchase, do your research first! Visiting sites like RetailMeNot.com can save you $$ on shipping costs and get you percent-off deals. All you have to do is search the retail store and user submitted online coupon codes will come up including the average amount of times they have worked for other users.

*Ever receive a gift card to a store you hate as a gift? Sell it! You can make some extra money to get what you really need by going to giftcards.com and offering your not so thoughtful gift for sale. If you want to grab a gift card or two for someone you can also use this site to purchase a gift card for less than what it is worth. You may just find yourself able to get that $100 gift card for $20 less!

You're Turning Me Off: End of the Night Edition

As young, mildly to extremely-attractive people we all have our preferences regarding potential mates and dates. Some guys like 'em tall, some ladies like 'em short. When something just ''does it for you," you really can't be blamed for what you like(1).
And the same applies to what you don't like....which leads me to my topic today: complete and utter turnoffs. We ALL have them. Now I'm no spokesperson for what women want; a few weeks ago I was into some other stuff, but what I can comment on is what most women, the right kind of women(2), definitely don't want:

1). TO BE GRABBED, POKED, PRODDED, VISUALLY RAPED, etc ANYWHERE
Why oh why do some men think it is acceptable to grab at a complete stranger? Unless a woman is about to fall, I cannot think of a single good reason. If you would like some attention simply come and talk to a woman. Or, better yet, simply look good. I guarantee not a woman in the room will overlook you. Especially when every other dude is looking like a casting reject from G's to Gents.

2). TO BE YELLED AT
Please don't yell at us. If we have made it more than about 15 feet ahead of you, just stop talking. This usually applies when one is walking out of a late night establishment. As a matter of fact, don't wait until the end of anything to come talk to a lady. You don't even really want her number. You just expected to have better luck inside, and when you didn't you realized you paid to get in and spent more than $50 at the bar and now you don't want to leave without at least a souvenir. We are, after all, in a recession.

3). TO BE REFERRED TO AS 'LIGHT SKIN', 'DARK SKIN', etc
Pretty much anything other than our God-given names. Of course most of you won't already know our names, but there are other options. If you totally ignored #2, or you just want to make a nice introduction, just say 'excuse me miss.'. This may seem corny, but all you're doing is approaching a lady as a lady. I can promise you she won't be walking to her car afterward thinking, "I can't believe he called me 'miss', how rude!" Further, some of us don't like to be defined by merely our shade of skin. That's just rude. What if we called after you "hey fatboy," or "hey dude-I-have-no-intention-of-calling-but-he-bought-me-a-drink-and-when-he-did-I-saw-he-had-a-lot-of-money-in-his-wallet-plus-his-friends-are-uglier-so-whatever!" Have I gone too far? Probably.

4). TO BE APPROACHED AT THE CAR
Please don't do this. Bottom line, if I am standing near the car I am even more ready to go than Wanda*. My feet hurt, my eye makeup is running down my cheeks, my edges are standing at attention...it's not a pretty sight. And if you're a lady sitting there reading this saying you look just as good at the end of the whole night as you did when you walked in, you suck, you're a liar and I'm jealous. Anyway, it's so much more than this, though. If I am in or near my car and you have followed me there, you just might get sprayed in the face with some mace. Neither of us really wants this to happen.

After, giving this post some thought, I said to myself, "Ciara, there are so many more turnoffs to be named. You have barely scratched the surface." So, with that said, I may be back with more. There are indeed, other scenarios that should be shared. But in the meantime, what are some of your own turnoffs, specifically following your going out experiences (i.e. after a club, party, etc)? We'll talk about the other ones later!

1. Unless you only like married men or something else just stupid.
2. The right kind of lady refers to one who doesn't frequent websites like this.

BOYFRIEND JEANS: THE NEW LOOK FOR 2009?

So what are Boyfriend Jeans? And can everyone rock them right? What are the rules to wearing Boyfriend Jeans? Make them your own, but dont overdo it! This look has the potential to be cute on SOMEONE and that SOMEONE could be YOU....if you rock em right!

Boyfriend Jeans are oversized jeans that are turned up at the bottom. Thats it! Doesnt sound too bad huh? Well if you dont have the right brand/fabric of jeans, the right top and right shoes to compliment these Boyfriend Jeans, then it can definitely be an outfit gone bad. Along with these jeans, the right attitude and confidence are two accessories that are needed to turn this potential hot outfit into that "IT" outfit.

According to www.fashionising.com, here are a few simple rules that can help make your Boyfriend Jeans outfit work for you....

1. Dont buy men's jeans because soon enough, there will be jeans for us women that can help make this look work.
2. Please buy straight legs and NOT bootcut....Self explanatory!(And for those "Fashion for Dummies" a flare cuff is NOT hot!)
3. Make sure that you turn the jeans up from the bottom, sitting right above the ankle.
4. Compliment these jeans with a feminine look. For example, fitted shirts, a nice pair of heels, banging accessories, a trendy, preferably oversized handbag, etc...

So, if you do decide to challenge your fashionista side with this new look for the Spring/Summer 2009, get your girly shirts, shoes and handbags together, accessorize with attitude and confidence and make this look your own!

WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO......

WAYNE WONDER? LIL VICIOUS? CLEOPATRA? BLAQUE?

What's Happening to Our Magazines?!

Over the last several years I've heard a lot of talk about the end of the magazine as we know it. As a writer and a reader this truly scares me. With the availability and ease of getting content online many people seem to find magazines unnecessary. Subscriptions are way, way down and readership seems to be as well. Maybe it's just time for change in the reading world, but one can't help but reminisce. Remember the first time you picked up a Word Up magazine? Okay, maybe it wasn't for the literary content as much as it was for the Immature posters. From Suede to Jane to King (yea, maybe not King) our fave mags are folding left and right. Now I don't hate the Internets (as our old friend Bush would say) for taking down mags. I would much rather go to a website for free than walk in Walgreen's and pay 4.99 for a high gloss mag filled with ads. However, the kid in me who collected stacks upon stacks of Seventeen and Vibe, and who currently has a nice collection of Essence and Elle growing, would really hate to see all my magazines fold. So how in the world do we support the written monthly word today?
